Modern Languages

The Modern Languages department is a dynamic and highly successful department at Forest Hill School.

We offer French, German and Spanish throughout the age and ability range, together with opportunities for pupils to study a second language including Latin. We are academically rigorous in our approach, consistently achieving GCSE results which are well above national averages and among the best in the school, yet we are also committed to giving our students a broad knowledge and appreciation of target language cultures.

We offer an extensive enrichment programme including cultural visits to Berlin, Paris, Barcelona and Cologne and a French homestay as well as a range of events and activities in school such as a European Christmas Market.

Key Stage 3

In years 7, 8 and 9 we aim to develop skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing in the three languages taught in the department.

Pupils learn to use linguistic knowledge and skills to understand and communicate effectively in the language they learn. They are shown how language works, how to use familiar language for new purposes and in new contexts, to recognize that languages differ but may share common grammatical, syntactical, lexical or even semantic features. They are encouraged to use their imagination to express thoughts, ideas, experiences and feelings. But most importantly they are guided, through language acquisition, to appreciate the richness and diversity of other cultures.

Students are given an option of a second language in early morning sessions in Years 8 and 9.

Key Stage 4

GCSE languages are a popular option and at Forest Hill we follow the AQA specifications shown below:

AQA GCSE German Specification

AQA GCSE Spanish Specification

AQA GCSE French Specification

We aim to give modern foreign language students the opportunities to develop the ability to communicate effectively through both the spoken and written word, to enhance their application of grammar in the target language and provide a suitable foundation for further study and/or practical use of the modern foreign language.

Pupils are also encouraged to take GCSE examinations in other languages within the curriculum which are not formally taught at Forest Hill but which the pupils have previously acquired, e.g. Chinese, Portuguese, Turkish, etc.

Sixth Form

We work with Sydenham School to offer French, German and Spanish courses in the Modern Languages department at AS/A2 Levels.

At Forest Hill we follow the AQA specifications for GCE Advanced Subsidiary (AS) and Advanced Level (A2) qualifications.

AQA AS and A Level Languages Specifications

Our teaching at AS and A Level draws from a wide range of sources and approaches to encourage students to develop a competence, interest in and enthusiasm for language learning and provide a sufficient basis for the further study of languages at degree level or equivalent.
